The English Language Arts (ELA) Department is dedicated to fostering a love for literature, honing communication skills, and nurturing critical thinking among students. The John Adams High School Library Media Center offers a comprehensive collection of over 10,000 volumes, including fiction, nonfiction, reference materials, and audiovisual resources. It provides students and staff with access to a variety of digital tools and research databases to support academic success.

UPCOMING EVENTS:
English Regents June 17th, 2025 at 9:15am
The New York State ELA Regents Exam is a required test for high school graduation, typically taken in 11th grade. However, students who demonstrate readiness and receive a teacher recommendation may take it in 9th or 10th grade. The exam measures students' skills in reading, literary analysis, and writing, based on state learning standards.
The exam consists of three parts:
- Part 1: Reading Comprehension- 3 passages and 24 multiple choice questions
- Part 2: Argumentative Essay
- Part 3: Text Analysis Response
The English Department offers tutoring during the school day, after school, and on Saturdays.

Department Happenings:
- Lit Day is an interdisciplinary celebration of literacy designed to engage students across content areas through creative, collaborative and culturally relevant learning experiences.
- In English, students created memes to analyze literary quotes and participated in a Literary Escape Room to practice vocabulary and context clue strategies.

After-School Tutoring Program provides targeted academic support for ENL students across all content areas.
Saturday Parent Workshops / Project New York
Parents have the opportunity to improve their English skills, learn about New York’s rich culture, and participate in interactive workshops on a variety of important topics.

Speaking 4/14 - 05/23 Listening /Reading/ Writing 05/12-05/23
The New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test (NYSESLAT) is given each year to students who are learning English. It measures progress in four areas: Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing.
